About this event

Vince Pellegrini
In the Voice of Sam Abell

Wednesday, February 11, at 7:00 PM ET

Sam Abell is a highly respected former National Geographic photographer who retired in 2001 after a distinguished 31-year career. The second phase of his photographic life continues to flourish, highlighted by his forthcoming two-volume, 400-page retrospective monograph. He was recently inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame, adding to his many honors.

Abell is known for a documentary style that is highly controlled and precise. His images are instantly recognizable for their quiet, contemplative quality and restrained use of color. LVPC member Vince Pellegrini has admired Abell’s work for many years, finding that Abell’s photographic principles closely align with his own. In May 2025, Vince fulfilled a long-held goal by attending a workshop with Abell.

The week-long workshop on Whidbey Island, Washington
, was an intense and immersive experience. Vince considers it the best workshop he has ever attended. Abell gave generously of himself each day, sharing deep insight and wisdom with the nine participants.

Vince will share the lessons he learned during this impactful week, how it reshaped his approach to photography, and examples of follow-up work created while applying Abell’s key principles. He believes photographers of any genre will find value in these ideas.

Biography:
Vince Pellegrini retired in 2018 after a 40-year career as an Obstetrician, Gynecologist, and Infertility specialist in Reading, PA. Since then, photography has more than filled his newly freed time. Vince is an active member of both the Lehigh Valley Photography Club and the Berks Photographic Society.

Vince has been photographing since 1967, when he received a Pentax Spotmatic kit. He began working in black-and-white, processing and printing his own images through 1974. He later transitioned to color slide film and spent many years producing Cibachrome color prints. In 2014, Vince made the move to digital photography, which allowed him to “return to the darkroom” by processing RAW image files on his computer.

Although Vince’s primary passion has always been nature and landscape photography, his photographic journey has continually evolved. He has returned to his early love of black-and-white imagery and expanded into a more creative, less representational approach. His recent work includes abstract and multiple-exposure images that intentionally alter reality.
