Stage Photography

The World of Stage Photography

Presented by Lee Butz

Stage photography can be challenging because light levels are sometimes low and the action fast. Actor’s expressions can be fleeting, and catching them is crucial. The concentration required over the length of a performance can be grueling, but Lee believes the opportunities far outweigh the challenges. For him, to capture the work of talented artists at just the right moment is thrilling.

None of Lee’s photographs are posed. They are all live-action shots taken during dress rehearsals. It is the only way to capture the feeling and immediacy of the actors “living” their parts, which you will see when you view any of Lee’s work.

Biography
Lee Butz’s interest in photography started with taking progress photos of building projects for the construction firm Alvin H. Butz, Inc and action shots of baseball teams that he mentored. In 1981, Father Gerard Schubert of DeSales University asked Lee if he ever photographed a play. Lee said he had not, but would try. That conversation set in motion over 35 years of photography of all theatre productions for DeSales University and then the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. Professional actors and directors who have performed all over the county have praised the quality of his work.
