Here are some abbreviations you may come across in these Forums and in magazines--please feel free to add any you come across for the benefit of new Beginner members:
AE - Auto Exposure
AEB - Automatic Exposure Bracketing, enabling the shooting of a series of shots with different exposures
AF – Autofocus
AV - Shooting mode which allows you to choose the aperture, the camera then setting the appropriate shutter speed
BIF- Birds In Flight
BMP - The Windows bitmap graphics format, used for images that will be used as system resources on PCs
CA- Chromatic Aberration
CF - Compact Flash, a type of removable memory card
CMOS - Complementary Metal-oxide Semiconductor, a type of image sensor used in digital cameras
CPL - Circular Polarizer Filter
DOF--Depth of Field
dpi - Dots Per Inch, the number of dots a printer can create per linear inch
DSLR--Digital Single Lens Reflex camera
EV compensation - Exposure Value compensation, the measure of exposure, which can change the amount of exposure chosen by the automatic exposure mechanism
EFL - Effective Focal Length
EVF-Electronic Viewfinder
EVIL- Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens (a true acronym)
EXIF- Exchangeable Image Format, a variation of the JPEG format
FC = focus confirmation
GIF - (Graphics Interchange Format), one of two file formats used for images on the web
IS - Image Stabilization
ISO (old term ASA) - a numeric measure of film speed
JPEG - (Joint Photographic Experts Group) the most common file format, designed expressly for storing digital image data.
LCD - Liquid Crystal Display, the display screen included with some digital cameras
LR - Lightroom program by Adobe
MF - Manual Focus
MP - Megapixels, one million pixels
OOB- Out of Bounds--Image post processing so the subject appears to step out of the image
OOF- Out of Focus
OVF- Optical View Finder
P & S- Point and Shoot camera
PICT - the standard format for MacIntosh system images, the equivalent of BMP for Windows.
PM- Personal Message sent to you on LVPC website under "My Messages"--it will also come to you in your regular email that you have a PM.
PP -Post processing of images using image editing programs
ppi - Pixels Per Inch
PSE- PhotoShop Elements program by Adobe
RGB - the standard color model for digital images, where all colors are created by combining red, green and blue light (ergo, R-G-B).
sRGB - a variation of the RPG color model
SD - Secure Digital, a type of removable memory card
SLR- Single Lens Reflex--camera with interchangeable lenses
SOFA = soft out of focus area
TIFF - (Tagged Image File Format) an image file format
TV - Shooting mode which allows you to choose the shutter speed, the camera then setting the appropriate aperture
TWAIN - a protocol that allows a photo-editing or catalog program to communicate directly with a digital camera or scanner
UV - Ultra-Violet (type of filter)
WB - White Balance
