I've been Published...

2 of my photos have been published or should I say are being published in a Book about Parrots. As soon as they send me the name of the book I will let all know. This pdf is the page that I am on and it is a very big book. I have seen it and proofed it out with my pictures in it...

Ric - with the royalties, you'll be able to buy all members E-3s.  I  guess I could sell mine and buy a good camera or two with the proceeds.

Congratulations 8)

How did you go about getting your images into this book?

One thing I noticed is that they did not attribute the photos to you on the attached pages.  I would think you should have "Photo by Ric ...."

There is a Credit page in the back of the book and all you have to do is look at the number with the picture to match the credit.

This is actually my 3rd publication. This one is in a book and could be on the web as well. The Book Publishers and also the writers browse flickr all the time for photos that they want. That is why flickr is good and also why you should tag every photo you put on not only with item tags but also with a geotag. I got a Bald Eagle published in the Pennsylvania State Monthly magazine for Travelers because of the tags but also because the picture was taken in PA which they knew by the Geotag. Same way with my Groundhog picture. Tagged both with the name of the animal and location tagged by geotags... I have had many requests for flowers and such but they just basically took what they wanted with no credits... Gotta watch...

Ric,

When you say "geotag" do you mean, for example "PA", Pennsylvania, etc.?

How do you encourage folks to visit your images.  I am new on flickr and don't know how to go about it.

Thanks

Off the top of my head, there are at least five basic ways to encourage people to view your photos....if anyone knows of others, please note them.

1. Put relevant tags on your photos (ex: if it's a photo of a pink rose, put in rose, flower, pink, and anything else you can think of) that describes the photo. Some people search on these tags.
2. Join other Groups that match up with your photos. (ex: if it's the same rose, join one or more flower groups and follow their rules, if any). People who enjoy looking at flowers will likely be looking at photos posted in these groups.
3. Accept invitations that you will get in comments to join Groups (see #2)
4. Geotag your photos. On the right side of your photo, under Additional Information, click "Place Photo on a Map". There, you can show where the photo was taken. If I was going to Barcelona, for example, I might want to see photos from that city, and so I'd go to that city on the Flickr map and look at said photos. When you're on a map, at the top left there's an option "Explore This Map". It will show you all other photos geotagged from places on that map.
5. Make Contacts. To do this, you invite other people to be your Contact. When I sign on, I usually look at the most recent photos from my Contacts. You can opt to see the last one, or the last five, from each. These are people I might share a common photographic or geographic interest with, and so I view their photos and perhaps they view mine as well.

Perhaps we should consider doing a member poll regarding others taking and publishing your photos without permission. I recently had an extended discussion about this with another member, and our conclusions were:
1. We'd be flattered that someone liked one of our photos enough to use it
2. We can't imagine ever pursuing selling or publishing one of our photos, so the benefit accruing to someone who did isn't something we "lost" anyway.
3. Where can I buy the book with my photo in it?
Then again, I think the majority of the group are strictly shooting-for-pleasure amateurs, and approach it differently that those of you who are pros, full or part time.

Obviously there is a way to attempt to protect your pjhotos against such use, but many of us don't even bother considering it.

How about these questions...
"Would you be upset if you found out one of your Flickr photos was used commercially (i.e., in a book)
a. without you being compensated?
b. without you being credited?
