Does any one have a Canon 85mm f/1.8?
« on: February 20, 2008, 03:35:23 pm »
I just sold one of my lenses to fund the purchase of a Canon 85mm f/1.8  Does any Canon user own this lens and if so, how do you like it?  I want it for indoor, low-light sports photography.

Sounds like it should be a good lens. My 50mm is f1.7 and great in low light but not a big enough lens for shooting like that. I did get my new f2.8 28-70mm which should be ok for that. Works good for Portraits indoors. Still wish I had a bigger lens with the bigger opening...

I have that lens, and it's the lens I most use for Portraiture - not sure about low light sports, but I would imagine it'd be just as great!

I bought it.  it's a great lens- Fast with quick auto-focus.  I like this lens a lot. Here's a shot at f/2.0:

How does the AF speed stack up?

The AF speed is excellent.  It's faster than my 16-35L.  I'd say on par with my 70-200L.  Not bad for a $300 lens.

I understand it is better for AF than the L 1.2 (similar to the AF speed slow on 50MM f/1.2L vs. 1.4 non-L)

I hesitated on that lens because if I wanted an indoor sports fast prime, it would be 200MM, as I don't shoot up close enough for 85.

I have the canon efs 17-85 lens. Its a great walk-about lens. Lightweight and easy to carry for long periods around the neck. I have taken indoor basketball games with some good results. I need a better flash for those type of shots.
