It is indestructible stuff!!!!  Soon I will be shelling out the big bucks for my D300.  I also have an F100 with SB-28 Speedlight and some autofocus lenses and a Nikon FM with various manual lenses that I've had since the late 70s that is banged up and abused but still works!!  I've also had several Nikon P&S "purse cameras" both film and digital.  All have taken incredible amounts of abuse.

I AM SO TOTALLY SPOILED WITH AUTOMATIC EVERYTHING THAT I NEED TO COME DOWN TO EARTH AND RUN SOME ((gasp!!!!)) FILM THROUGH MY NIKON FM.
Actually, my F100 makes such perfect exposures on automatic that it is unbelievable!!!  It did that right out of the box!!  I remember how awkward it was to go from fully manual (FM) to the F100.  Of course you can still use fully manual settings and lenses on the F100 too.........
Anthony, I don't know if your Dad's (now seemingly primitive) manual lenses will work with the D50.  The mount may be similar but that may be where the similarities end.  I know they told me that my autofocus lenses I have now (for the F100) will work with the D300 but that I will have to make a few adjustments.

All these folks who knock Nikon as just jealous! They wish they would have chosen Nikon in the first place. I've had a Coolpix 990, D-100, D-200 and now have a D2H and a D-300. All the functions and fine tuning adjustments that they have built in, make for precision exposure control and if you are lazy, their fully automatic mode is right so much of the time that you really don't need to fine tune--unless you are REAL picky.

Brian,
I shot with a D3 inside Dan's DPU Classroom.
WOW!!!! Full frame, INCREDIBLE SCREEN!!!
Jason at Dan's showed me a wedding pic at ISO 12,500.
It had noise but was still a good shot.
It obviously is in a class above the D300, 50D, E3.
If you are contiplating getting it, go for it!!!! But it is $$$

I am not bitter, but CR is to me is all smoke and mirrors. Ever look at their car reports? they always rate (deservedly so) Honda and Toyota high, but then with certain cars, they give a CR recommended even though a car has horrible interior, poor handling, etc.

I think out of the three, you can't go wrong as each serves a purpose and does what it is designed to do well.

I like the Nikon--Canon--Olympus competition because that spurs each of those companies on to out-do each other and make better cameras FOR  US!!!!!.
.....Just like the Big Three Automakers of yesteryear..... sigh........

All I have to do is look in my camera collection at my Grandma's old 1920 box camera (620 film) and at my Dad's 1940s Rollei TLR (Twin Lens Reflex--the kind you pop up the viewfinder and see the square image upside down) and my step-grandfather's 1930 Argus 35mm rangefinder that weighs as much as a brick and WOW!!!!!!!  We've come a long way baby!!!

At the time my father died in 1996 (age 75) he was still actively reading photographic magazines and just learning how to use Windows and the computer.  He told me that in a few years I wouldn't be using film anymore.  I just laughed......  I started using a digital camera in 1998 (1.3 megapixel!!) and since 2000 I have used digital almost exclusively.
So now, instead of having boxes of paper photos and shelves full of photo albums, I have CDs and DVDs full of photos!!!

The old man was right.......again!!!!   ;D

Hi Nikon Fans,

When we bought my D50, we purchased the lens kit (this was before the telephoto came as a VR).  I am ready to buy a better lens, or to be more precise Tony is going to buy it for me for Christmas.  Anyway, I rented the AF-S VR Nikkor 70-300 mm from Dan's for a week, so I can see how I like it.  I went to Dan's to talk to the Nikon representative, on Saturday, and this is the one he recommended.

Fortunately, for me, the rain finally stopped by Saturday afternoon.  We have slowly been hiking the Hugh Moore Canal 5 or 6 miles at a time, so we used this opportunity to check out the lens.  I couldn't get over how much easier it is to take pictures with the VR.  I took some very nice pictures handlheld even though it was very windy out.  Do any of you have an opinion or input about this lens?  Most reviewers seemed pleased with it, but there were one or two who said at the maximum zoom the pictures weren't that great.  We didn't notice that being a problem, but thought maybe some more expert shooters would know what they are talking about.  Another choice was the 80-400 mm, but that is a lot more expensive and Jen is still in college.

I have this AF-S VR Nikkor 70-300 mm, works pretty good for me. Glass is better then 18-200 mm VR that I am using as well.

Ouch! That racer is lucky his capsule did its job! Did you see where this same racer broke his back a year before this accident? I think he needs to seriously look for another line of work and/or hobby.

Oops - guess you really wanted me to comment on the D3 at 9 fps. The photographer did a nice job of using the camera to good advantage.
