Firefox Question
« on: September 08, 2008, 10:19:32 pm »
Well I downloaded version 3 and don't care for it. I can't seem to be able to figure out how to reload my previous version. Mozzilla is no help. When I search for info, it brings me to page that says you can revert back to previous version but then no info how.  Can anyone help me out here?

Uninstall FF3 then reinstall your older version.  All of your bookmarks and settings should remain.  If it's still hosed, let me know and I can help you at least retrieve your bookmarks.

If your going to try a new FireFox build and don't want the install you use every day FUBAR'd, I reccomend using the portable version of FireFox.  It installs in to a directory of your choice and doesn't make any registry entries or install anything into any other directory.  You can even copy it onto a portable USB key if you want.  Get it here:  http://portableapps.com/

Thanks Anthony,

I'll have to try that when I get home from work in the a.m. On my lap top I can only locate the new version. I'll have to copy the older version from my other computer.

Can I ask what you don't like about it?   I personally think FF3 rocks.   I install most browsers to test various things on for both home and at work, so I have IE, FF, Safari, Opera, Chrome, etc loaded and FF3 is by far the best browser IMHO.    Fast, doesn't suffer from memory leaks like previous versions, and Live Bookmarks rock.

The only thing I don't like - is the design (mostly - the color) of the Tabs. Black text on dark Grey background is hard to read. Is there way to customize it?

Absolutely - hundreds, thousands of themes out there to choose from.  Can make it look like just about anything you'd like.

At the top, go to tools -> Add-Ons -> Themes

Go here to search themes.

What is driving me absolutely crazy, in a bad way, is bookmarking a web page. The old way I could put it in a folder of my choice. Now it seem like I can't, so I bookmark pages and then later go into organizer and put it where I want it to go. The other thing I don't like is when I am typing web pages the info bar get all this info that confuses me. I like the old way, that when I entered letters it gave me possible web addresses, with only 1 line per choice. It just seems so cluttered to me.

I also don't see any great improvement for my purposes. And as Anthony said, I really dislike the silver color scheme. There support page is also useless as far as I'm concerned.

You can change the behavior of the url bar back to what you're used to.  Start by typing:

about:config

into the address bar and hit enter.  Scroll down to browser.urlbar.maxRichResults.  Double click it and change the value to "0".  You may need to restart the browser for the change to take effect.

As far as bookmarks go, there's a drop-down to select a folder whenever I bookmark a page.  Are you not seeing that?

You can find a bajillion different looks and color schemes at Mozilla's Add-on site.  It's just a matter of picking one you like.

1) When you bookmark a page, you just select the drop down bar and select which folder you want to put it into.  Very easy and actually, much improved over the old way IMHO. Especially when you can "tag" your bookmarks and pull them up by the tag. Don't hit just the "folder" drop down, which only shows the most common ones used.  To the right of that is another drop down and you can drop it into any folder that you have or create a new one if you choose.

You may want to look at this.

2) One big reason for the upgrade for 3 versus 2.  MEMORY LEAKS.   Firefox 2 will eventually leak all your RAM and your system will come to a crawl or crash.   Again, read the page I linked to above and learn about smart bookmarks, etc.   It's a fantastic system.

I happen to like the default theme myself, but very easy to change using any number of different themes out there.

I believe that is actually how the old version worked. Now I open bookmark and have an option to choose. I think its "bookmark Menu", then click the arrow, then click "choose", then click the folder I want it in.

I will read that link. I glanced over it but I must admit I am not a big fan of tags

OK Scot, I finally see what you mean. i need to be in bookmarks menu then click the right arrow. The only thing now is that the last bookmark you chose appears the next time you bookmark. so there is definitely some adjustment for me. Now, however I don't dislike it as much as the past few weeks.

Brian, you info was close but not exactly what I want done. That just changes the number of suggestions. If I enter 0 then no suggestions appear. I like the suggestions just not the multiple lines that pop up. Example the link name on one line, the URL on the next. just give me the URL. thanks though, it does lesson the amount of suggestions which makes it  so overwhelming to the eyes when they pop up. i set ti for 4

The only "problems" I am having with Firefox is that I am not taking the time  to customize it to my specifications.  Eventually I will but right now I am too busy/lazy..........
Yet another one of those things I should have taken care of when I was off work for a month with my Achilles tendinitis..........
