What do you think about this?
« on: July 29, 2008, 10:03:17 pm »
Any critiques and suggestions are highly appreciated.

Name of the picture: "Even in darkness, there is light"

A think it's a great concept. I like the use of the dark negative space. And the composition nice, with the light spill leading you to the subject.

I think the visual clutter inside the door distracts and weakens the image. The problem is that in terms of tone your eye sees light>dark>light>dark moving from left to right, and the clutter creates a mixed point of interest. And I think that you could strengthen the composition by removing the some of the area above the door, either with a crop or a different angle.

I love the photo - it reminds me of a scene from a dark first person shooter game.   ;)

I don't find the 'graffiti' on the right distracting at all - I find it adds to the interest of the dark / light contrast and how the light spills onto the wall.

I love it.
It gives that feeling of being released from solitary confinement, not that I have experience like that.

Alex, I liked the first one just the way it was but after you tweaked it and darkened the area above the door like Ray suggested I think it looks better now.  I also like the graffitti on the door.

I think the image has potential. The main issue I have with it is that the vantage point is a bit boring. Possibly getting lower to the ground to take this shot would give it more visual impact?

Anyhow, here's the tweaks I would make to the existing image:

Thank you for your input!
Can't retake it any time soon - it is in Krakov, Poland. Paper size will probably determine final crop. But paper type, lightness and color intense of the door -  it is still hard for me to decide.
