The Celtic Eye
« on: July 06, 2008, 11:03:28 pm »
Hi gang!

So here is my first "newbie" submission.  This picture was taken at Columcille Megalith Park last month during the Summer Solstice celebration.  The structure is called "The Celtic Eye", and was constructed by volunteers of Columcille.  Walking through the center has a transformation effect, which is another story for another time.

Good angle on that but too many shadows. This is where a fill flash would of helped.... There are pictures of this and the other "Stones" on my site also... Did you get any from the "Donation Tree"?

Ric,

Thanks for the critique! ;D

The shadows were self inflicted via Photoshop.  The original is much brighter, but for whatever reason I am drawn to a darker composition.  I took close to 250 pictures that day, but am not familiar with the "donation tree."  I will have to head over to your site and check it out.

Peace,
Bryan

As the picture seems to be in a wooded glade I don't mind the shadows as much, or the darkness of the composition. I think there's more than enough contrast difference to make the circle pop out as the main point of interest. However, I really don't like the trees on the right. While they do add some context, the shadows and background do a better, and less distracting, job of it. I think the image would have been stronger with a different crop and/or a different horizontal angle to the wall to eliminate the trees. And while the vertical angle is fine, I think a shot from a lower height angling up would have added a bit of drama.

I must admit this is pretty cool.  I never had an opportunity for other photographers to critique my work (outside of college), and it is making me look at things differently.  It looks like I made a great decision joining such a fantastic club.

Thanks Gang!

I think Ray is correct about the trees on the right.  It would be better without them.  Nice job, though!  Glad you came on board.
