Using LED flashlights in Macro Work
« on: June 03, 2008, 08:36:34 pm »
I just discovered a fascinating article by Les Saucier on the use of the new LED flashlights in macro photography. Beside allowing for multi-dimensional control of lighting, it also opens the way for in-camera use of both warming and cooling gels in the same image. I haven't had a chance to try the techniques discussed yet. However, as this month's assignment is macros it seems timely to call the article to the attention of those who are interested in macro photography (and who isn't?).
The article is entitled "Making the Light Sing and Dance" and is the third listed on the following page:

Great article, Ralph.

I recently happened upon this method by accident.   :D

Thanks for the article. I've also discovered it by "accident" when I was shooting my GLOW photo. I wanted to backlight a flower to make it appear to be lit brightly by a candle flame, and had a Mag-type light I had recently bought. With a bright focused beam, it was easy to control the amount of light by varying the distance from the subject.

I try to shoot all Macro with natural light but if needed I will use a duel Flash setup along with 2 of my Daylight Studio umbrellas. Very rare that I do that though. I did it that way for my "Curves" shot though.
