New way to Dye Muslin....
« on: January 26, 2008, 07:50:25 pm »
Found out a new way to dye your "Muslin" backgrounds...

Just dip your rolled and tied blank backgrounds into a small plastic storage bin filled with dye. In my case I was dying with Black. Roll the ball of material around for about 15 minutes then take outside and hang until fairly dripped dry. Then just bring back inside, through in dryer and WAIT FOR 3 WEEKS until the dye comes off your hands.  ;D Yes I did not put gloves on while working with the dye and now my hands are black and it does not come off. :'(

Enjoy the Laughs on me...

Well, that would be great but now it has a green tint to it because before I did the Black I did a green background the same way of course... By then it was too late...

Needless to say the backgrounds turned out really good and I saved some big money on buying them in the Photo Stores... Example... I bought a 10'x20' blue dyed background for $39.99 plus $17.98 for shipping where the same size that I did cost me $31.00 for the Muslin and $4.00 for the dye... A big savings.. Photo stores want way more... The ones I bought were on ebay... I wanted to do 4 backgrounds but Wal-Mart only had enough for 2.

If anyone knows where I can get plain "Muslin" (10'x20') cheap, please let me know. These are for the Club.

Have you tried a fabric store like Joann's?  I'm not sure about the width, though.

Maybe the fabric store can give you a name of a manufacturer.  Perhaps an art supply store might have a clue for you.  I know that muslin is layered with "gesso" to make  a painting canvas surface.  Since some artists paint very large canvases, they must have gotten the material somewhere.  Just a thought.  Trying to help.
