Eagles in Portland?
« on: June 17, 2010, 01:50:07 pm »
Hi

I'm planning on taking a trip up to see if the Eagles are up in Portland.
I have some "directions" but does anyone have a detailed route?

Do you know if they are still in the nest?

Please email my home email:  blkcat123@rcn.com with info.

Thanks,
Beth Schmoyer

They are there Beth...

I can tell you that if you take route 512 North, through Bangor and East Bangor, follow all the way to the stop sign which will be Route 611. Make a left turn onto Route 611 towards Portland/Route 80. As soon as you go under a Bridge stay to your right to follow to route 611 North. Take the exit right, which is right after you pass under the bridge. At the Stop sign you want to be in the right lane for a right turn. Turn right and go over the Railroad tracks. After you go over the Railroad tracks you are in their area. Keep driving up the road slowly while keeping an eye out on the left for a large pole with a platform on top. As soon as you see the pole and platform try to park your car even with it on the road. Get out of your car and look to the right of the pole. The Eagles nest is in the top of the Pine Tree just to the right of the pole. There is almost always an adult on the pole keeping watch along with one in the nest. You can walk down to the tree line next to the tracks only so have a long lens. Any further than that and Met-Ed will say something.

You can drive up the road a bit more and turn around at the Met-Ed/GPU entrance sign and park on the same side as the Eagles also. Don't attempt to walk down the road that leads to Met-Ed. Again they will yell unless you get lucky and get permission from the guards.

As a note.... There is another Eagles nest down the road further and up the hill to the right but you would get lost if you don't know the area.

Hope this helps...

Also sent this to your email...

Thanks
The directions were great!
We went up today, Dan's didn't have a lens to rent, ended up using my 75-300, not too bad w/the cropping but not that great either
Eaglettes were the only ones there, mom & dad never came in the 3 hrs we sat there & watched

Glad you made it there ok. Sorry to hear the parents were no where to be found. They probably went on a vacation now.  ;)

Nice pictures that you sent me. I really like the ones like the one posted here.

I was up to Hawk Mountain recently and saw 25 Balds.  It was a great day.  You can check out the Hawk Mountain web site to see the migration time line.  http://www.hawkmountain.org/index.php?pr=Home_Page.
