Thank you Rhonda & Lee!

I went looking for Spring and found a taste of it at Longwood Gardens. (The Orchid Extravaganza is going on now!)

Thanks Sandy!

I have a "Garden Pass" (annual membership) and it's not that far away! We should set this up for a club visit again!

I'd be open to going any weekend April-June before my busy time at work (July & August).  ;D

Hey Tj, I've been a little remiss in hitting the critique forum. My mind has been elsewhere... mostly eBay where I have been selling some fly fishing gear to raise money for a new Canon 5D Mark II. I've now reached my goal and beyond. Once the monies clear into my account (Monday), I will be ordering the new camera probably from Adorama since I am now an Adorama Affiliate.

On to the critique. There are several things that I think could improve this image. First, I tend to prefer stems to enter the frame from an angle rather than straight up from the bottom center. All it takes is rotating the camera and you've accomplished that.

Second, I am not really keen on the split color background. I would have tried to move one way or the other to get either a green background or a yellow background. My preference would be the yellow background. I think you could do some interesting things with a yellow on yellow composition.

Finally, the flower itself appears a bit drab. I would really like to see it pop more. Maybe a bit more contrast and a bit more saturation. Did you shoot this with the vision of creating a soft image of the daisy? I ask because to my eye, the flower needs to be sharper... at least some part of it maybe the center.

I temper all this by saying that I personally find yellows and red to be the most challenging to work with.

I hope this helps, Tj.

Now a Longwood question. What are the blue flowers that everyone is all hopped up about that bloom in March?

Thanks for the comments, Ed.

Everything you've said I've told myself. I took a few of the same flower with single color backing it but there's something about the softness with the mixed color background that I like. And, while I did intend for a soft touch, maybe it's too much...Still not sure.  :-\

The blue flowers that everyone is mentioning are the "blue bells" that bloom at Lockridge (Alburtis) in April. Here's a look at them:

Tj,

I was coming back to this image over and over and still have the same feelings:

- I do like this mixed colors background, cold and warm tones of it create some overall dynamic

- Composition is fine with me

- Softness of the flower makes a photograph

What is bothers me is a camera shake (most likely, because it is indoors) and as a result - motion blur on petals on a back. It's hard to fix it now, try to use shorter exposure next time (or tripod).

Thank you for the comments, Alex!

I think the blur that you mention on the back petals is what is getting me. I was sitting listening to a speaker at Longwood and happened to spy this daisy high above the others. This was handheld and I know that's what caused the blur. I'll have to try and re-create it next visit.  ;D
