April Location Shoot---Roadside America/Shartlesville, PA
« on: March 24, 2008, 10:53:49 am »
Our April Location Shoot is Roadside America in Shartlesville, PA, about 5 miles west of Hamburg along I-78.  It is a model train layout and miniature village that is handmade and an AAA attraction for generations.  The town of Shartlesville along Old 22 is also neat and quirky, with antique shops and colorfully painted houses.

Date of the Club Shoot is  Sunday, 20 April 2008.  This is a great shoot for the entire family to enjoy as seeing the children's faces as they watch the trains is priceless.  Lots of "Kodak Moments"!!!

We will meet at Roadside America at noon and plan to have a Family-style PA Dutch Smorgasbord meal at Haag's Hotel in Shartlesville around 2 pm.  There are also many photo opportunities in Shartlesville after our meal.

I will post the website for Roadside America   (www.roadsideamericainc.com)  along with the Group prices for admission and the meal at Haag's later.  I will see if we can get a Group Discount for Haag's  (www.haagshotel.com/home.html)   as well but I will probably have to have an approximate head count ahead of time.
The meal at Haag's Hotel is optional of course!!!

Roadside America/Shartlesville, PA  is also our April Location of the Month so any photos taken of Roadside America and the town of Shartlesville, PA during the calendar month of April 2008 can be uploaded to our LVPC Flickr website.  If you can't make the Group Shoot on the 20th, feel free to go anytime during the calendar month of April and post your photos along with everyone else's.  Please post only current photos, not last year's or 5 years ago.

Check back for details......   Loretta

From their website:

ROADSIDE AMERICA is an unforgettable panorama of life in the rural United States. The exhibit spans more than two hundred years in time and lets you see, in exquisite miniature, how people lived and worked in pioneer days … through the years since then … right up to the present.

In newspapers and magazines, ROADSIDE AMERICA has been acclaimed as the greatest  known miniature village—the most unique and detailed masterpiece of its kind in the world. Actually, it is not one village, but many—really the American countryside as it might be seen by a giant so huge that he could see from coast to coast.

Roadside America is a great place to visit, especially if you are into modeling and trains.

Be sure to bring a monopod if you have one, because as I recall there is little room for tripods to be set up.  Also, I remember the lighting to be somewhat dim so bring your flash and your high ISO settings.  They actually turn the ambient lighting off at one point to simulate night and all the buildings, etc. are lit internally.  With the right support that can make a real nice image.

I remember shooting this 40 years ago. I wonder if when they dim the lights and light all the buildings up they still play the stirring version of The Star Spangled Banner and project the American flag on the wall like they used to. It's worth the price of admission to just be in this place of old-time Americana. When my grandkids come to visit this summer, they'll be the 4th generation of my family going there (and to Haag's as well).

I've double checked with both Roadside America and Haag's Hotel and got some more info on prices and Group Discounts.

Roadside America gives a Group Discount for buses or groups of 25 or more that come in together (not including children 5 and under, who are free anyway).  I don't know if we will have 25 or not.  Admission there is:  Age 12 to Adult--$6.00 (4.50 Group) and Children Age 6 to 11--$3.00 ($2.00 Group). I think they still give the AAA Discount on Admission in case we don't have enough for a Group Discount.

Haag's Hotel has a full service bar and serves All-You-Can-Eat Family Style Dinners.  They will set tables up for us to all sit together.  I estimated about 20 people but they would like a more accurate headcount by Friday.  I think we will put out a sign up sheet at the Club Meeting on Thursday and of course you can RSVP on this Message Board by replying with how many adults and children in your family and whether or not you will need a high chair or booster seat for any little ones.  Also note if you are willing to car pool with others.

Haag's Family Style Dinner Pricing:
They offer All You Can Eat Chicken, Ham and Sausage, loads of hot vegetables, breads, cold salads, desserts, and coffee, tea, milk or soda, all included.  There is a full service bar for anyone who would like alcohol with the meal.
     Adults---All 3 meats $16.50, choice of 2 meats $15.75, choice of 1 meat $15.00.
     Children 7 to 12  all items  $8.00
     Children 3 to 6   all items   $4.00
     Children 3 and under FREE

We will meet at Noon, Sunday the 20th of April at Roadside America, just south of the Shartlesville exit of I-78 on Old 22.  It is about 35 miles west of Allentown and 5 miles west of Cabela's at the Hamburg exit.  There is a map on their website:   www.roadsideamericainc.com
We should be ready for our meal by about 2 pm.

Haag's Hotel is right in the center of the village of Shartlesville on Main Street (Old 22).
HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL AT THE CLUB MEETING ON THURSDAY NIGHT AND AT ROADSIDE AMERICA!!!!!!

Add one for me on Sunday. My family used to love Haag's. I was there when young (yes, I was once young) with my parents, and we used to take our boys there as well.

I regret that I will not be able to attend the Roadside America photo shoot or dinner.  I will be at the Thursday meeting.

Lee... can I get you to stop by Qwest Field and take a few pics?  Perhaps hunt down some autographs and get me some free tickets?  Yes - I'm a lifelong Seahawks fan.  ;)

We will have a sign up sheet at the Club Meeting on Thursday and I promised an approximate head count for the meal at Haag's by Friday.  I'm sure it won't be a problem if you can't decide until the last minute.  If we have to we can call Haag's from Roadside America and tell them to add to our table setting.  Please note if you will need a high chair or booster seat at the table.
