Stay tuned for info on our 2nd Annual Scavenger Hunt.  It is again being arranged by our Scavenger Hunt expert and Treasurer, Jeff Grim.
It will be held on Sunday, May 17th, time and place to meet to be announced.  We are also looking into a central location for picking up the Scavenger Hunt "List of Items" so that some members could also do it on Saturday if that day is better for them.
After the Scavenger Hunt there will be a special thread for posting by a certain time and date for entries to be judged and a winner selected.

Our 2nd annual photo scavenger, scheduled for this weekend (Sunday the 17th), is ready to roll.  Those who attended last year's event at the Promenade Shops reportedly had a good time.

Here's the basic scoop. While the schedule shows a 9am starting time, you can venture to Jim Thorpe anytime during the day. It's going to be a busier weekend than usual, with the celebration of the birthday of Jim Thorpe.

This is how the scavenger hunt will work. You can pick up your instructions as the Visitor's center located in the train station. I'll be there at 9am to drop them off and hand them out to you that come early, but the staff will have them for you during the day. I also suggest you pick up a Jim Thorpe guide, with a map on P. 44. In your packet will be instructions, as well as the list of items to photograph. I have planned the shots so that they area you need to cover is clearly defined, and limited to a small area, perhaps three blocks long and one block wide. No long hikes necessary, just you, your camera, and some imagination. There will be about ten shots for the contest, so you won't have to find all the 15-20 items listed to win.  As we did last year, it's more about finding the things than the quality of the photos, although there wil be a small consideration for that as well. If you find them quickly, you could shoot them all in an hour or so, but it's hoped you enjoy the town and what it has to offer.

Once done, you'll have until Wednesday evening at 7pm to post them on the forum. After that, entrees will be scored, with a prize ( "How to Photograph Absolutely Everything" by Tom Ang...I ordered two for myself in error <smile>) awarded at the meeting on Thursday night.

When we planned the date, we were not aware that there was a celebration going on during the weekend. After talking to the staff there, Sunday should be OK, especially if you come early. On Saturday, a train will be coming in and unloading 700 tourists...ouch! However, if you are bound and determined to shot on Saturday and enjoy large crowds, they train doesn't arrive until 11am. If you're going on Saturday instead, e-mail me (jegrim@aol.com) and I'll e-mail you the instructions and the list of items. You are also welcome to go up on Monday through Wednesday, and I'll ask the Visitor's Center to hold some envelopes until then.

For those of you not familiar with the town, it's located on Route 209 north of Lehighton, less than an hour's drive from Allentown. It's a beautiful little place. At the turn of the 19th century, it was second only to Niagara Falls as a tourist destination. Great little places to eat, interesting little shops, and some seriously nice architecture. I was up this week to finish the scavenger hunt, and had a nice breakfast at Albright Mansion on Braodway (not an ad, just a comment).

Look for more information in the next couple of days.

If you have any questions, please post them.

2nd Annual Scavenger Hunt
Jim Thorpe
May 2009

•   This is similar to a traditional scavenger hunt, except your goal is to gather photographs of the items/assignments.
•   Each person will have the same list of twenty-one (21) items, which only Jeff has seen.
•   All shots can be taken from outdoors, so you shouldn’t have to worry about permissions to shoot.
•   Well, you CAN go in and shoot inside the stores…the photos just won’t count. 
•   Take as many shots as you want, but post only TEN.
•   Post all ten shots (or as many of the ten you have) in one post on the designated Forums section of the LVPC website, beginning 7:00pm on Sunday.
•   You may choose to have this scored or unscored by letting us know when you post the photos to the Forum.
•   Scores will be compiled following the close of time for posting at midnight on Wednesday, the 20th.
•   A prize will be awarded to the person garnering the most points. These items are not intended to stump anyone, but rather intended as a game to have a good time and show photo creativity.
•   I (Jeff Grim) will be there Sunday morning at 9am for some undetermined time, but it is not necessary to contact me. Packets wil be available at the desk in the Visitor's Office.
•   If there are questions regarding appropriateness of the shot or the scoring, the ruling of the judge will be final.

Lastly, have fun!

Jeff,

Tony and I had the best time today.  Thank you for taking the time to make the Scavenger Hunt.  It was very well done, and it was so much fun trying to figure out all the clues.  We got hung up on two of the clues, but I finally figured out one and discovered the other one as we walked back to the one I had figured out.  I had all 21 pictures by 12:30 p.m. and that is even with our stop at the Albright Mansion Restaurant for Brunch.

When I left there at 11am, there were seven of our members participating in the scavenger hunt.  They seemed to be having a good time. Perhaps it was the weather forecast, or perhaps that that it was scheduled for a single day and people had other things scheduled, or it just may be that 80 or so of our members have no interest in a scavenger hunt.

So, to find out, and allow those who wanted to participate but couldn't, the Events Committee has extended this event through next Sunday. That's right, you can venture up to Jim Thorpe anytime between today and sunset next Sunday. IF you go, check in at the Visitor's Center in the train station for an envelope with contest rules and items to shoot. Then, take advantage of the scenery, the architecture, the history and a nice breakfast or lunch.

IF you're one of those people who like to get there REALLY early (like before 9am), re-mail me and I'll e-mail back with the rules and photo list.

Regardless of previous instructions, PLEASE don't post any of your hunt photos until 7pm next Sunday, and then up until Wednesday at 7pm.

Thanks,

Jeff

LVPC May Photo Shoot Scavenger Hunt

Jeff relaxing at the Albright Museum Restaurant as he watches all his hard work pay off.  He organized the Photo Scavenger Hunt, so he had the pleasure of watching everyone else try to figure out his clues.  He did an amazing job!

We had a wonderful time!!  I went with my sister Carol and niece Rachel.  The weather started out a bit cold but the skies eventually turned blue.  We were there rather late in the afternoon and caught up with Sue Smith and her son and new member Kenn Miller and his wife.
I took a lot of photos all day long both in Jim Thorpe and on the road during drives to and from.
I'm posting a few photos on Flickr that I took that day but none from the actual Scavenger Hunt.  I don't want to give away any clues!!!

We could post some photos on this thread as well...just not any of the 21 items.   ;)  It's a great place to do some shooting.

Those of you who were there on Sunday will recognize some of the places on this shot from Flagstaff. Those of you who might take advantage of extending the scavenger hunt through next Sunday should know that the location I shot this from is NOT on the list.

Jeff,

That is a phenomenal shot of Jim Thorpe.  Where exactly did you take it from in Flagstaff.  I love how the Lehigh River is showing in the corner.  The color on the river is so pretty.  I went online last night and did some research about the different buildings.  I LOVE history, so I just had to know the 5 W's about the area.  I won't be posting any of that information until after the contest is over.

I had a blast wandering around Jim Thorpe taking photos. My wife joined my and some other members of my family randomly showed up later in the day. I don't think I really spent much time just enjoying the town before. I've been there, but it felt more rushed before. It was nice running into Loretta upon arrival and getting a nice warm welcome. I think we stayed for about 2-3 hours. It was a ton of fun and I think I'd like to head back up there sometime in the future to photograph some more. I'd really like to take some photos in the old jail. That place is really interesting. Oh well, I look forward to seeing everyone's entries next week. :)
